Book Review: Angelfall (Minor Spoilers)

Summary from the publisher:

It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where she’ll risk everything to rescue her sister and he’ll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

While I have been reading regularly since January, I haven’t read anything that’s inspired me enough to compel me to write a post about it… Until Angelfall. The first book in what is expected to be a five book series entitled ‘Penryn & The End of Days’. I feel a bit shameful about leaving this book for so long but also glad that I didn’t read it in 2011 when I would have had to wait two years for the sequel, World After.

The world that Ee has created in this novel is excellent, just when I thought I had gotten a firm grip on the state of the world and the direction that the book would take – it took me, the reader, in a completely unexpected direction. The book was devoid of the cheesy declaration of love I expected that would have been wildly out of character, instead there were vicious and repulsive angels, an agnostic angel and cannibals! It was a truly wild ride. Let me say that about halfway through the book I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the intensity of the book – if you’re a fan of action packed novels then look no further. My problem was that I felt like every time things were starting to work out and Penryn and Raffe were getting to where they wanted to be, something would trip them up. I found it a little frustrating but I understand that that’s the way that novels work and it by the time I was in the last half of the book I couldn’t put it down. The lesson: never abandon your books!

I loved the main character, Penryn. I was so excited to read a female character who knew how to take care of herself (but to a believable extent). If I had to choose a YA heroine to have as a best friend I’d probably pick Penryn. Her thought process was neither inane nor frustrating and she was loyal, the thing that kept her going was her love for her sister which was highly admirable. The secondary characters also really piqued my attention and I hope to read more about the other characters such as Josiah, the albino angel, charismatic Obi, Penryn’s mother and sister as well as Dee and Dum (did anyone else think Weasley twins when they were described as cheeky boy-next-door redheads?!). I also appreciated the slow build of relationship between Penryn and Raffe which still hadn’t fully developed at the conclusion of the novel, leaving me eager for more.

This book is like a breath of fresh air in angel-centric YA fiction. I don’t know if there’s anyone out there who hasn’t read this yet but if you’re looking for a fast-paced dystopian novel akin to The Hunger Games, look no further than Angelfall. If you’re okay with creepy and a dark representation of angels, and you’re looking for a badass heroine then this is the book for you.

Movie Talk: Rails and Ties (2007)

Rails and Ties is a movie about a train engineer who loves his wife. It’s a movie about a strained marriage. It’s about a terminally ill mother who never had a child and a child who has been forced to raise himself as a result of a mentally ill mother. A man who is forced to make a choice between derailing his passenger train or killing a mother who has driven onto the tracks. This movie is about learning to love even in the most difficult circumstances.

Honestly, I saw the DVD cover for this and rolled my eyes. The story can be easily predicted within the first ten minutes of the film but the execution was perfect. I don’t think predictability is always a bad thing.

I was initially put off by the film because I thought I would find Kevin Bacon inaccessible as the lead in a drama film driven as well as Marcia Gay Harden, to a lesser extent. How wrong I was. What a nice film. The characters were so easy to connect with, especially the emotionally mature yet believable young Davey. Spare me from the portrayal of idiotic and brash children devoid of reason. Rails and Ties is like what every Lifetime movie aspires to be but most can’t quite reach – a movie that leaves a lasting bittersweet taste in your mouth.

For a film that touches on so many issues: cancer, death, drug abuse, mental illness, the failure of child protection services etc. It was surprisingly soft, it wasn’t ever difficult too watch nor too gritty. Which is something that I personally like but something that others might not like in a drama film.

I’d recommend this movie to those who are looking for a drama film that won’t leave them too broken when the end credits roll but who are looking to lose themselves for 94 minutes in a story of love and loss.

Some Kind of Wonderful

I only watched Some Kind of Wonderful for the first time this year. I loved it. Probably because I loved Keith. Stupid, lovely Keith who is arty and sensitive. Who makes weird decisions and then impassioned speeches justifying them and (spoiler) doesn’t realise who he really loves until the last five minutes of the film. Damn, this movie made me giggle and smile and freak out like a person in love.

There were things I didn’t like about it though… I wish that Watts had been a little less passive and that she hadn’t taken the earrings right at the end! I hope that in the movie universe, Watts takes the earrings back so that Keith gets to go to art school where he thrives and is able to achieve everything he wants in life. And become successful so that his father’s faith in him is justified. If I withdrew all my life savings to buy a boy jewellery, no way would my old man be that chill.

As I always do after watching a movie that I really love, I googled the hell of Some Kind of Wonderful as soon as the credits were on screen – I re-read plots, look up actors, directors and trivia!!!!! I love trivia. Did you know that Eric Stoltz was initially cast as Marty McFly in Back to the Future two years prior? He filmed for five weeks but I think they decided to go with a more comedic actor… If that hadn’t happened, Lea Thompson would’ve played his Mother, only to play his love interest a few years later in Some Kind of Wonderful.

That’s all for today, just wanted to record how I feel about this movie.

“I loved you so much once. I did. More than anything in the whole wide world. Imagine that. What a laugh that is now. Can you believe it? We were so intimate once upon a time I can’t believe it now. The memory of being that intimate with somebody. We were so intimate I could puke. I can’t imagine ever being that intimate with somebody else. I haven’t been.”
