I had a bit of an animation movie night tonight; I watched both “Rise of the Guardians” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. Charlie Brown was appropriately charming and sufficient at provoking nostalgia.
I’m including “Rise of the Guardians” within my countdown because any feel good movie is appropriate when getting into the Christmas spirit. I love when movies/novels subvert traditional folklore and origin stories and this movie does that well, Santa is Russian and tatted up, yetis make christmas toys for children rather than the elves etc.
I was kind of disappointed over Jack Frost’s voice actor. Chris Pine’s voice seemed at odds with Jack Frost’s very appearance. This is similar to how I can’t enjoy “Anastasia” because John Cusack’s voice didn’t seem to match Dimitri’s face. I’m pedantic like that. On the subject of voices though; this movie earned points with me for shocking me by giving the Easter Bunny an Aussie accent. I love hearing that familiar accent in American movies with largely American casts.
All in all, “Rise of the Guardians” was enjoyable to watch. I found it entertaining enough and visually impressive.
